Thoughts

This was my book club’s pick for March, and I couldn’t have been more excited!

Lakshmi is a character that you will root for until the end!  She is married off at a very young age to Hari, which was tradition.  Hari becomes abusive when Lakshmi fails to produce offspring.  Knowing one day his beatings will kill her, she escapes to Jaipur where she becomes the most sought after henna artist.  It took Lakshmi years to build a clientele with the rich and powerful, and she is one party away from getting an appointment at the palace until a sister she never knew about shows up with the husband she ran from.  Threatening to ruin everything Lakshmi has built, she must decide between family and fame.

This book!! I felt like I was transported to India in 1950 and was standing right along Lakshmi’s side.  I loved learning about the culture and India in general.  Lakshmi is one of the strongest characters I have ever read about having survived an abusive marriage and starting a business where she was in charge.  Before her sister came along she was climbing the ranks and building a home of her own.  You knew once the sister arrived that drama would ensue, and boy did it ever.

This is a book that you need in your life, and read it now because Lakshmi’s story continues in The Secret Keeper of Jaipur (The Henna Artist #2) that comes out June 22, 2021.

We have a friend from India, and when he got married it was a four day, scaled down from seven.  The bride-to-be loaned me a saree and my husband wore a kurta as part of the wedding party.  I was so excited there was a henna artist there that I was first in line to get henna on my arms, and reading this book brought back these memories!  It was so much fun.

Have you ever had henna done?
