My Mini Thoughts
This was my first Paul Tremblay book, and boy does he do a good job of making you feel like you are right there with the characters. There is a rapid spreading rabies virus that spreads through saliva. One of our main characters, Natalie, is at home waiting for her husband who has run to the store to get supplies. She is pregnant with her first child and scared. I felt like I was holding my breath waiting for him to get home. When he does return, a neighbor who is infected comes up behind him. It doesn’t end well for Natalie’s husband and she gets bit in the process. Now time is against her as she tries to save herself and her unborn child. Thankfully her best friend is a doctor who helps her get into the hospital, but they soon find out they are not safe anywhere they go.
I was on edge reading this book. I loved Natalie and Rams friendship and how willing Rams was to risk everything to help her friend. I also loved the two teenage “zombie hunters’ ‘ they run into a long way. A little humor in the time of complete chaos. With that said, I don’t think this was the right time for me to read this book. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I didn’t read it while we’re in the middle of a pandemic. However if you enjoy apocalyptic stories, this is the book for you!

In a matter of weeks, Massachusetts has been overrun by an insidious rabies-like virus that is spread by saliva. But unlike rabies, the disease has a terrifyingly short incubation period of an hour or less. Those infected quickly lose their minds and are driven to bite and infect as many others as they can before they inevitably succumb. Hospitals are inundated with the sick and dying, and hysteria has taken hold. To try to limit its spread, the commonwealth is under quarantine and curfew. But society is breaking down and the government’s emergency protocols are faltering.
Dr. Ramola “Rams” Sherman, a soft-spoken pediatrician in her mid-thirties, receives a frantic phone call from Natalie, a friend who is eight months pregnant. Natalie’s husband has been killed—viciously attacked by an infected neighbor—and in a failed attempt to save him, Natalie, too, was bitten. Natalie’s only chance of survival is to get to a hospital as quickly as possible to receive a rabies vaccine. The clock is ticking for her and for her unborn child.
Natalie’s fight for life becomes a desperate odyssey as she and Rams make their way through a hostile landscape filled with dangers beyond their worst nightmares—terrifying, strange, and sometimes deadly challenges that push them to the brink.
