My Thoughts

I feel like I have been in a reading slump for awhile, and this book brought me out of it!  It is also my book club’s October book pick!  I can’t wait to see what everyone thought.

Cassidy is a high school girl trying to survive all that comes with being a teenager, but she’s different.  She’s not supposed to be alive either, but her new best friend, Jacob, saved her from drowning.  Did I mention that Jacob is a ghost?  After her brush with death, Cassidy can see The Veil…also known as the other side.  When she crosses over it feels a little bit like drowning all over again.

So it’s the end of the school year and Cassidy and her family usually pack up and head to the beach house, but not this summer.  Her parents are ghost hunters of sorts, and are packing up the family, including Grim the cat, and heading to Scotland to film a documentary.  Now I don’t know if this is true, but in the book Edinburgh is one of the most haunted places and only Cassidy can see that it is.  There she meets Lara who is just like her, and warns her about the Red Raven who collects children’s souls.   What do the dead want that the living have? To be alive again, and the Red Raven will succeed if she captures Cassidy.

While this book does have a serious side, it’s mostly humorous.   I love Cassidy and Jacob’s relationship.  They made up all of these rules that they are always throwing out!  Rule #22 ……  All the rules made me laugh.  I wondered if there would be any romance between them in this book, but there was not.  Maybe in the next one!  This is only the first book in the series, so I can’t wait to read more about Cassidy, Jacob and their adventures.

Goodreads Synopsis

Cassidy Blake’s parents are The Inspecters, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one.

When The Inspecters head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn’t sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn’t belong in her world. Cassidy’s powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.
